Naming Compounds
Here are a few rules that will help you if you need to name an ionic compound
1). Name the cation first, then the anion. The cation comes first when you write a formula.
2). If you have a monatomic cation, use the element name. Like for the cation K, you would name it potassium.
3). Monatomic anions use the root of their name plus the suffix -ide. Like for NaF you would name it Sodium Fluoride.
4). Group 1A and group 2A metals have only one oxidation number; transition metals have more then one.
5). If the compound has a polyatomic ion, just name the ion.
2). If you have a monatomic cation, use the element name. Like for the cation K, you would name it potassium.
3). Monatomic anions use the root of their name plus the suffix -ide. Like for NaF you would name it Sodium Fluoride.
